Russian Circles' fourth LP, Empros, is a masterful blend of light and dark, showing the Chicago trio's instrumental talent. Swinging between ethereal beauty and brutal intensity, the album features meticulously constructed compositions, as bassist Brian Cook stated, he might never create another record from the ground up like this. Tracks like 'Mladek' fuse contrasting styles seamlessly, with a vibrant guitar chug transitioning into black metal-inspired heaviness. The album's best moments, such as the transition from 'Schiphol' to 'Atackla' and the static and drums opening 'Batu,' demonstrate the band's knack for blending gorgeous elements with powerful rumble. The album's complexity is balanced with clarity, making each move more impactful. The closing track, 'Praise Be Man,' deviates with a rare vocal performance by Cook, providing a soulful, Spiritualized-like comedown. This track, a surprising yet fitting end, highlights the album's expansive scope, marking Empros as Russian Circles' heaviest and most ambitious work to date.
