Description
Payment Race Columbia 13001-D Bessie Smith w/F. Henderson (E+)
Click to view supersized image Columbia began its "Race" series in 1923, beginning with catalog #13000-D. Triskaidekaphobia (fear of number thirteen) apparently took over, because after only 8 releases, they changed to catalog numbers beginning in the 14000-D series which continued for 10 years.
Offered here is a lovely example of the early series, Columbia 13001-D by the famed blues singer Bessie Smith, entitled "Any Woman's Blues." Fletcher Henderson on piano accompanies Bessie. On the reverse side, this time accompanied by Jimmy Jones on piano, has Bessie singing "Cemetery Blues." This 78rpm disc is in shiny excellent-plus (E+) condition.
