The obscure Irish outfit Radioactive Lamb's collectable and mostly hard-to-find discography stretches back to 1990, and contains some excellent music released on (usually) limited edition vinyl. In 1998 they were scheduled to finally release their debut album on General Production's sublabel Freedag Nuveaux, and hopefully reach out to a wider audience. Unfortunately for R.A.L., however, GPR went out of business before the album was properly released. Only a very limited run of CDs was printed, making the album a sought after record as it was not only brilliant but also one of the most impossibly rare releases in electronic music. But in September 2005, GPR once again did what they've been doing every so often the last few years; that is, occasionally resurfacing to provide a reissue of one of their long lost back catalogue albums (previous re-release jobs being Black Dog and Luke Slater full-lengths). The legalities surrounding these reissues are disputed, but at least "The Memoirs..." looks like a bona fide release and isn't plagued by photocopied dodginess à la the sleeve on the repress of Black Dog's "Temple of Transparent Balls". "Memoirs..." is a wonderful album, taking influences from both UK-styled IDM and armchair techno along the lines of Black Dog/Plaid, B12 and early Aphex as well as classic Detroit leanings and jazz. Not a strikingly original formula, perhaps, but although this was a well established "sound" in 1998 and even more so in 2005, R.A.L. manage to pull it off easily with style and finesse, and with some killer tunes to boot. "Bellevedere" and "Alø 2" are funky techno numbers with Carl Craig and Kenny Larkin references, personal highlight "My Call" is lush melancholic brilliance which just oozes class, and "I'll Be All Yours" is a splendid downtempo jazz jam, once again with those glorious strings attached. Not a single duff track either; this is an excellent album from start to finish. It's a shame that it took 7 years before this record was finally made available, but the album hasn't dated at all in the meantime and remains an essential album for techno and IDM fans alike. Get it.
