SO HERE IS THE BIG QUESTION:  WHAT IS A RADIO SHOW?  WHY COLLECT THEM?  WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? 

Well, those are good questions, especially if you have never known of them. 

 Radio Shows are syndicated productions by one of several large and small distributors who supply broadcast product to radio stations normally during weekends when the usual air personalities have a break.

Many air on Saturday or Sunday evenings or during overnight segments. They often feature some of the best known voices for their genre from across the country thus the Dick Clark's and Casey Kasem's and Rick Dees  and Dick Bartley and so many others.

 People collect them for various reasons.  

 Some just collect the series because they like it and want them all. 

Some collect their favorite artists or genre of music.  Rather than an album by the artist or a compilation bought at Wal Mart or downloaded through iTunes or wherever, they have a unique presentation of their favorite artist or music not available anywhere else and always with dj presentations which were very entertaining.  

Some collect interviews with their favorite artists as most shows had interview segments. 

Some collect commercials especially old car commercials but certainly not limited to only those. 

AND, these shows are in limited quantity.  

They were pressed just for syndicated stations in the United States.

Some of the more popular shows may have as many as a few hundred of each week's show that were pressed and who knows how many of each survived. 

 Many if not most stations just tossed them after their air date since the show was dated by the commercials and could not be played on the air again.  Some kept them. 

So,  they are increasingly hard to find.

They were first distributed on reel to reel tape if the show goes back that far into the 60's, then later on lp, later on CD and even later (after 2000 for most shows) on CDR.  Now they are not available at all to collectors since they are distributed by digital download much like you get your music from iTunes.   

These lp shows are almost unfindable.  I haven't seen one on ebay in years.

These shows become rarer and rarer every day because the people who buy them hold on to them and the people who sell them, like me, are running out of them.  My best contact for these FLASHBACK shows is out and  I am at the mercy of finding a good deal here and there but never from a regular source.  The shows that you get now and hold on to will never decrease in value and only increase.

 And you just can't find them anywhere.  Even record stores that still exist will rarely have any. 

  Radio shows are wonderful representations of the real golden age of music radio and of all genres besides from rock to classical. 

 And every  one you buy is  an original, not a copy, not a remake - all are limited editions in the hundreds at most and most much less.

Picture yourself back in the  70's, 80's and even the 90's.  You were glued to your transistor radio listening to the country top 40 presented by your local radio station. You had that radio glued to your ear or connected with the little earphone jack that immediately broke.  Your local dj was great.  He knew the music.  He had the gift of talking which rarely occurs anymore.  You loved the presentation of the music as much as the sounds.  You liked the station jingles. 

 And on weekends when the local dj's had off, you listened to either taped shows they did during the week to be played on the weekend or a syndicated radio show featuring one of the greats. 

 It was the golden age of music.  Music was king and the dj's were just as popular.  You can relive those days whether you grew up then or just wish you had on only a handful of oldies shows.  THIS IS ONE OF THEM. 

OK guys and gals, A REAL TREAT!!! 

I am beginning to list my last GREAT FLASHBACK SHOWS.  This is probably the best classic rock show ever to air anywhere.  And, while the music can be found anywhere, this show presents music in such creative sets it will please and amaze.

You will hear all the best in classic rock for two hours on each show, ARRANGED IN GREAT THEMES. 

Host BILL ST. JAMES, the host from the beginning of the show in the late 80's when still on lp. is a great dj.   Every show has two one hour themes. 

Flashback is an American radio show syndicated by Cumulus Media Networks (formerly Citadel Media and ABC Radio). Flashback plays a diverse mix of classic rock from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Other show elements include newscasts, classic TV and movie clips, commercials and comedy bits to create thematic segments from the 1960s into the 1990s. The four-hour program is syndicated to over 200 radio affiliates in the United States and Canada.

Flashback was originally hosted by voiceover artist Bill St. James. In January 2012 he was replaced by Matt Pinfield, who currently hosts 120 Minutes on MTV2 and is a former DJ and record executive

Bill was the heart of the series.  When he left, without being able to say goodbye to his audience, he wrote an open letter to his fans.  It is said to be one of the mistakes in radio syndication letting him go, much as ABC released Dick Bartley who had hosted his show for over 20 years.  

Bill currently has a similar show on United Stations Radio Networks.  Here is the story announcing his new venture.

Former “Flashback” host Bill St. James has joined with the United Stations Radio Networks for a new syndicated radio classic rock program, “Time Warp With Bill St. James.”  The four-hour weekend show is produced by RTE Media, created by Dan Formento after the departure of he and St. James from Cumulus Media’s syndicated “Flashback” show- now hosted by Matt Pinfield.  St. James is the announcer for NBC-TV’s “Sunday Night Football,” The Super Bowl” and “The Olympics,” and the commercial voice of 2012’s Oscar-winning Best Picture “The Artist.” His radio experience includes Hartford’s WEXT and WDRC, WIP Philadelphia, and New York’s WNEW-AM and WYNY-FM. The first new “Time Warp” is available for the weekend of March 17-18, with United Stations handling national ad sales and affiliate relations.

All this makes these classic shows even more desirable.

 The show comes on 2 lp's (two hours) in perfect condition looking just like they were just pressed and WERE NEVER PLAYED.  

   They come along with their cue sheets in excellent condition.

All  my other listed shows are in mint new condition and played only once since my sources have been direct radio station sources.  Very few of my shows come through third party collectors where they may possibly could have been played  again although usually not there either, as collectors tend to preserve their rarity by not playing them.

One of the most enjoyable and unpredictable features of this great show is that any times during each theme snippets of commercials, news items, interviews, movie soundtracks, tv soundtracks and other entertainment related to the theme is intermixed with the music in perfect relation to the theme.  It makes the hours all that much more enjoyable. 

AND, following the last track of the second hour hour are approximately six tracks of bonus theme material including collages and interviews and entertainment bits all in the clear which make them great for download into your personal collection

This week's show is #38 from the very first year in the series and aired on SEPTEMBER 21, 1987 on the NBC entertainment radio network.  (The bulk of the years of this show are on the ABC network.  The switch came after the switch to cd format)

Probably when you heard them back then they were an annoyance but now they are nostalgia!  But if they still are annoying, you don't have to hear any of them -  just go to  the next track and off you go back to the music.

This show needs to be in your collection.  These are the last so get them while you can! 

Don't worry, though, I will always sell my shows at reasonable prices.  I am a collector too and know how hard it is to find a good deal anymore.
