Description
This is among the half-dozen most amazing Jazz albums I've ever heard. Duke Ellington was never known as a bop musician, not because he couldn't play it, it's just that his creativity and skill went in a lot of other directions. But here he really shows the younger guys that he's more than up playing amazing hard bop piano.
All the more amazing because it was recorded in Ellington's late career and, forgive me if you have another opinion, but I think it was his last and quite possibly his greatest-ever burst of creativity.
These three gentlemen got together to do more than play music. The album has a message -- the kind of political message that Charlie Mingus was often delivering at that time, and I think the selection of tunes and Ellington's nod to the younger man's skill and approach to music. Think about it. What's the Money Jungle -- it's the USA, it's our modern all-about-the-bucks economic systems worldwide--you hear the dissonance and discord coming hard out of Ellington's piano.
Then there are quieter, more peaceful tunes, like Le Fleurs Africaines that perhaps point to a better kind of life, more connected to our roots, and nature. This tune alone is worth the price of admission.
