Dean Webb: ‘Hey Miss Fannie’ & ‘Warm Your Heart’

Parlophone 45-R 4549; 1959.

This 1959 recording is one of only two records that Dean recorded under his own name on the Parlophone label. The other, The Rough & The Smooth, also from 1959, is described as ‘classic Edwardian bop’.

Dean Webb, who played mandolin, is best known for his six guest appearances on the US Andy Griffith Show in the early 60s as one of the ‘Darling Family’. He has toured nationally with the Bluegrass group ‘The Dillards’ and has even performed at Carnegie Hall. Dean was inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame at the Ryan Auditorium, Nashville, Tenn. in October 2009.

The song, ‘Hey Miss Fannie’ was originally a hit for ‘The Clovers’ in 1952 and was also recorded by, amongst others, ‘The Wink Westerners’, with Roy Orbison in the line-up (1955), and ‘Benny Leaders’. With its clear Bluegrass, R&B roots, ‘Hey Miss Fannie’ appears to have transmuted over time into a classic British beat number, and Dean Webb’s version features on a number of compilation albums, including volume 4 of ‘British Beat Before The Beatles’ (1993).

The pressing on offer, in its original Parlophone sleeve, appears to be in good (or better) condition, but has not been played to confirm this. The matrix numbers are (@ 6 o’clock) 7XCE 16304/5 – 1N; ET / XT (@ 9 o’clock) and G (Warm Your Heart) or JR (Hey Miss Fannie) @ 3 o’clock. The sleeve is in good condition for its age, with some creasing and dog-earing. This original vinyl recording is clearly rare and is not, for instance, currently available on either Vinyltap or MusicStack websites – although there maybe other perfectly good reasons for this!
