Description

Exceptionally rare estate find:  15 12" 78rpm Series EE V-Discs from 1946 in original War Department shipping box, addressed to the USS Spangenberg, hull number DE-223 with the envelope containing 100 V-disc needles.  Also included is the original information/packing slip.  All records (vinylite) are in excellent condition and may have been played once or twice onboard; titles and artists are listed below.  It is important to note that the V-disc promotional program, begun in 1943, was intended as a morale booster for the troops during WWII.  The recordings are all original performances, even if the material were recorded previously, and include greetings and well-wishes from the artists. The records were to be destroyed once the war was over and very few have survived.
The USS Spangenberg was named for Kenneth Spangenberg, a native of Allentown PA, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his bravery and fortitude aboard the USS San Francisco earlier in the war.  The Spangenberg was decommissioned in 1947 and was scrapped out of the Philadelphia Shipyard in 1965, so there is a strong Pennsylvania connection. Out of respect to all of those who have served and defended our nation, 10% of the sale price will be donated to the Wounded Warriors project.
