So.. here’s Giannina Russ (1873 – 1951), a very fine Italian soprano (who, if her photographs on-line are anything to go by, looks like she’d be useful in a fight) on a lovely, hard-to-find Fonotipia 10¾" disc.
We’ve had this disc since the mid 1970’s and until today have never noticed that it has a pressing-fault-hairline!
See the description, after the details!
It was recorded in 1905, in Milan.
One side is 39357 Mx xPh 401 and features “Figlio Del Sol” from Meyerbeer’s L’Africana. It was “waxed”, as we trendies say, on October the 28th, and the other side is a selection from Manon Lescaut by Puccini. That side has the numbers 39481 and Mx xPh 365 and was recorded on October 3rd. Fonotipia have called it “Solo di Manon – Atto II” but it’s actually “In Quelle Trine Morbide” which is a song about curtains.
Yes it really is.
Look it up.
(Thank You Robert Johannesson).
Both sides feature piano accompaniment, and you can hear (somebody else’s) copies of both sides of this rare Fonotipia 78 on You Tube.
Condition-wise, we would describe it as “certainly not perfect, but perfectly collectable”.
It plays with some clicks and clonks, because there are some “grit in the sleeve” marks and several handling marks. There are no grievous needle-runs or flesh-wounds.
BUT BUT BUT there is a 2½” hairline crack, noticeable on one side only. It is totally safe, and is in the middle of the playing surface, with no connection to the edge or spindle hole! It is inaudible, but it’s the reason that the item has such a LOW LOW LOW starting price.
The label is slightly scruffy but complete, and there’s a clearly visible “autograph” in the wax on both sides.
And remember, it IS one hundred and twenty one years old!
Let’s say (using “Record Collector” Magazine’s guidelines) it’s a fair VG- or thereabouts... because of that hairline.
The record in the photographs, is the record you will get.
Please examine the photographs, and check the above description.
NO OVERSEAS bidders please.
