Description
Lovely and very rare autographed letter from the legendary 19th century Italian Tenor - Francesco Tamagno (1850-1905) who was famed for having created the role of Otello for Verdi in 1887 . In his day one of the most famous and highly paid singers.
The autograph letter is not dated but relates to the period in 1899 when he was contracted to the Monte Carlo opera and premiered the role of Helion in Messalina by De Lara. The letter is addressed to Efficio who was the costume master at the opera house and refers to Ginsbourg who was the manager. The general text is referring to a crown which Tamagno was keeping to use for other roles elsewhere. Not sure if the crown was ever returned (as he was a shrewd operator it may not have been)?!
The letter and autograph are in black ink in Tamagno's own bold hand. The autograph is in his name "Francesco" (but no reference to Tamagno - this is common with other letters he sent at the time). Paper has not been trimmed so is complete. However has been folded by Tamagno at time to write his letter as can be seen.
The signature is still bold and clear. So excellent as seen in pictures.
Bought by me when I collected grand opera memorabilia and with intention to frame and display. Never managed this so time is now to sell and let another collector enjoy.
Offered at a sensible price given rarity of item.
