Max Roach and Archie Shepp, who after working togheter for the past four years in the university community, arrived at that juncture in September 1976, when the dead of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung and the revolts in South Africa pushed them to examine that motion in history, in which men, ideas and events clash and create new realities. This historic album, Force, by these two giants in contemporary music, prepresents an articulation of consience shaped by their unyielding commitment to Freedom, Justice and Human Dignity. Max Roach and Archie Shepp have always been at the forefront of the cultural struggle African-Americans, as their music reflects not only the crises of the recent past, but as it remains an expression of the historical revolt against slavery, racism, neo-slavery and injustice. They are immersed in the continuum of Black creative music, always bending and shaping it to the concrete reality of of the American ethos. They are cultural workers, who provide a spiritual force and material energy that will allow as to go forward with streght and conviction.
