Here we have a startlingly rare John McCormack Pathé “78rpm?” disc, cut using the Pathé “hill and dale/vertical cut” system (he goes up and down instead of side to side).

The “78rpm?” is in inverted commas, because Pathé recorded at many different speeds (often using slower revs to get a long piece onto the disc).

You’ll have to find the speed that suits your ear ‘ole.

The selections are “Come Back To Erin” and “The Dear Little Shamrock” and the numbers are 77686/7 (mx 33511 and 33517).  They were recorded in approximately 1906/7 or maybe as late as 1908, because (being dubbed from cylinders) it all got very vague over the intervening 115 years.

Certainly, 1908 seems to be the date of the disc pressing.

Unlike the earlier painful G&Ts, McCormack has found his true voice by the time of these recordings, and sounds very much like he did when recording for Odeon.

The disc looks nice and clean, and has no major faults. The surface of “Come Back To Erin” has a longish light swishy scuffy mark which might be from a gritty sleeve. It looks very superficial.

We haven’ t play-tested this disc, because we don’t have the correct soundbox/cartridge.

Please check if your machine can handle the “vertical cut” or “hill and dale” system.
