Up for auction is a very rare original deep groove (both sides) record album by the blues legend Muddy Waters entitled “Muddy Waters Sings Big Bill”. Record is on the original black Chess label (LP 1444) from 1960. The vinyl is in VG++ condition with a beautiful original gloss. Some would call it NM-, but I’ve conservatively graded at VG++. Has one minor superficial scratch that does not affect play. The cover is in VG++ condition with a minor crease in the upper right hand corner, a very small air pocket bubble, and slight yellowing from age. There is also a one inch separation at the top right hand corner near opening, ½ inch top center, and very slight ringwear. Nice clear labels. No writing, stickers, cuts, or holes. Overall this record is in exceptional condition and a very rare piece of American blues history! You just don’t see many of these in this condition anymore!
McKinley Morganfield aka “Muddy Waters” was born in 1913 in Issaquena County, Mississippi. He is an American blues icon and is generally considered the father of Chicago blues. He grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi where his grandmother raised him after his mother tragically died in 1918. His fondness for playing in mud earned him his nickname “Muddy” at a very early age. He started out on the harmonica, but by seventeen switched to the guitar, influenced early by two legendary bluesmen, Son House and the great Robert Johnson. In the early part of the 1940’s Muddy ran a juke house, complete with gambling, moonshine, and live music courtesy of himself. In 1943 he moved north to Chicago in hopes of becoming a full-time professional. In 1945 Waters' uncle gave him his first electric guitar and thus created the legend.
Muddy Waters is considered one of the greatest and most influential bluesmen of all time. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and in 2004 was ranked #17 in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
“Big Bill” Broonzy was the top bluesman in Chicago until his tragic death in 1958. Big Bill helped Waters out by letting him open for him in the rowdy clubs. This album was a tribute to Broonzy, in recognition of his impact on Waters’ career. It’s truly a rarity and great piece of blues history.
