Description
It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please “bear” that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have a 1969 7" 45rpm single on the prestigious Blue Cat label (even though one photograph in my listing shows a cat which is plainly not blue). The toons are Drumbago by Sam Sham, and Song Of The Year by The Sparkers.
Sam Sham is nothing to do with Domingo Samudio, the "Wooly Bully" fellow and appears to be two(?) chaps singing a two-chord-wonder which has lots of references to "Kick The Bucket" and even shares bits of the "Longshot" tune.
It was probably named after the drummer Arkland Parks aka Drumbago, who collaborated with Prince Buster on numerous records. The bass player deserves a medal.
On the other side, The Sparkers may be the same vocalists (?) performing Song Of The Year a splendid tune in which our award-worthy bass player earns another medal, probably with a bar and extra stripe this time.
The Blue Cat label is always worthy of attention, and these Nehemiah Reid productions are a couple of bobby dazzlers.
Conditionwise, I'd call the disc something like a VG/VG+. It has a couple of marks on Drumbago which, if you haven't pressed the "mono" button, appear as non-troublesome clicks. The Song Of The Year side is much cleaner and plays beautifully throughout. I'd call that side an honest collectable VG+ although a thieving ratbag in a dimly lit record fair would probably grade it higher and attempt to steal your sandwiches.
I don't think I've ever seen a record cut so LOUD. It sounds GREAT.
Buy now and be the envy of your friends.
I am not a dealer.
I am just a very old bloke thinning out his lifetime collection of STUFF before the floor collapses (or I do).
I'm selling most of this stuff for much less
than I paid for it.
What a great business plan (I don't think)!
I am certainly NOT INTERESTED IN PROFIT..
..and indeed, seldom make any!
What little profit I do make goes to help
a very splendid Wildlife Rescue Charity.
The item in the photograph is the item you will get.
I have described everything to the best of my ability, and it looks in excellent condition to me.
Please check the photographs to decide for yourself.
NO OVERSEAS bidders please.
And NO OVERSEAS bidders using UK addresses please.
I am a simple sort, and I want my buyers to be happy. If there is any kind of problem, I like to sort it out personally. I can’t do this if you’re thousands of miles away!
