Description
This is a MEGA RARE Canadian Garage Psych 45. The Amen, " PETER ZEUS " b/w, " CARNIVALS and COTTON CANDY " c.1967 on Indie Label Algoma Productions.
The A track (written by band member, Tim Ryan) " Carnivals and Cotton Candy " is a Pop tune and the B side (written by band members, Tim Ryan and Bob Clarke), " Peter Zeus " on the Psychedelic side with the bongo drums and tambourines. This would be their Only 45 as the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada band would have a change in personnel by mid 1967 and finally disband by the end of that same year. They would not re-assemble until December 2007, 40 years later, for a Sault Ste. Marie revival show, "18 Forever". The track, " PETER ZEUS" has been comped on Wyld Canada Vol.5 - "Love Itis" (Best Of).
The band formed in the mid '60's and after playing many gigs in the Soo area, headed for Toronto and opened for notable Canadian groups, The Paupers, The Tripp, The Rabble, Kensington Market, and The Guess Who. Another similar band which formed around the same time as The Amen was (Those) Rogues, with a more hard-edged punk sound.
The Amen included, Tim Ryan (Vocals), Ed Schryer (Lead Guitar), Nick Scali (Rhythm Guitar), Dave Wilson (Bass), and Bob Clarke (Drums).
The producer John Holt, passed away a few years back, but it is guessed that only 600 combined copies were made of this 45 and the (Those) Rogues sole 45 and the split is not known. Many copies of both 45's, acetates, and other recording information likely were lost in a fire many years ago at the home of the producer, John Holt.
Popsike, and Collector's Frenzy show NO recorded sales for the past several years. The record was manufactured by Arc Sound Special Services.
Excellent information on The Amen is available at - GARAGEHANGOVER; Jam Showbiz, The Canadian Pop encyclopedia; CanuckistanMusic (Crate Digging in Canada); and Canadian Bands.
