Teddy Burns:Fallin Rain/I'm a Man (Daltona/late 70s)
Here's one for the ages. Totally insane berzerk off-the -wall over-the-top, well you get the picture. A total garage monster that blows away anything on Pebbles, Boulders, Rubble, Back From the Grave (well, almost), et al. French Elvis wannabe covers the Yardbirds classic like it's never been done before. Four and a half minutes of the sickest fuzz puking all over your aural senses, spiced heavy harmonica grunts, on top of which Teddy belts out the words with his pseudo Elvis voice in some accent that is even more non-descript than Andy Kaufman's Latka Gravis (especially when he spells out M-A-N MAYEN). The sum is even greater than its parts.
The other side is an original retro-early 60s ballad. Teddy's singing here is like The King singng after eating a few too many fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Some one once described Mrs. Miller's singing as sounding like she was hicupping while gargling kerosene. On this song, Teddy's voice raises the possibility he could be her demon-spawn son.
Everyone who went nuts over Stud Cole will flip over this. Compared to Teddy B, the Studster IS Elvis. Teddy is as real as it gets.
This isn't even all. The amazing Mr. Burns had 2 more 45s (including his equally flipped shredding of Train Kept A'Rolling - if I ever get a spare of this, watch out for that description) plus 2 LPs filled with similar yahowayout rock'n'roll covers and truly higher key originals.
Note: While this was recorded in France (the reason I call him French ), the label is from the US (Nashville).
The picture sleeve is a strong VG. (heavy ring crease from the insertion of the record; three corners are creased; there is a very slight tear on one of the edges). The record looks a strong VG+ ( a few light scuffs, a small bubble in the middle of the first side), plays Mint minus (no noise from the bubble).
