Description
This set must rank the best ever box set of orchestral music! Not only it gathers 12 of the best conductors ever known to the stereo era, it also has the greatest sound by Kenneth Wilkinson, done in the sonically spectacular Walthamstow Hall in London. Several of them were issued by Chesky for their excellent quality of performance and sound and are hard and expensive to find now. It also has the 13th "bonus" disc conducted by Leibowitz.
One word of caution: there are mono sets with the same title, box design, and listing number. If you see it somewhere else, you MUST ask for a photo of the label! And don't accept general grading of "good shape", as many owners of Reader's Digest sets don't know how to grade collectible records, let alone what "stamper number" means! Trust me, I'm speaking from painful experience! This early set has all single digit stampers.
Record condition and stampers:
1. Kempe: NM-/EX- (1S/4S) light rubbing marks but plays well. Note this set only comes with paper inner sleeves with nice conductors' photos. It's almost inevitable to rub on record surface when you slide the records in and out of the sleeves. I've added poly-lined sleeves after I clean the records.
2. Munch: NM-/NM- (2S/2S)
3. Fistoulari: NM-/EX+ (6S/7S)
4. Reiner: EX+/EX+ (1S/2S) some light rubbing marks. Alas, his last commercial recording! Less than 2 months later, Reiner died of heart attack.
5. Krips: NM-/NM- (1S/3S)
6. Horenstein: NM-/EX+ (3S/9S) one light, harmless rubbing mark
7. Leibowitz: NM-/NM- (2S/2S)
8. Dorati: NM-/NM- (3S/8S) See if you can hear him groaning and stomping on the podium?
9. Barbirolli: NM-/M- (1S/4S) My favorite version of the Sibelius 2! Absolute heartfelt reading, done shortly after the passing of Barbirolli's mother.
10. Pretre: EX+/EX+ (3S/1S) some harmless light rubbing marks
11. Sargent/Wild: NM-/NM- (3S/7S)
12. Danon: NM-/NM- (3S/3S) WOW! No wonder Chesky picked this for reissue. It is highly sought after once the audiophile world found out how good the recording is!
