Description

It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.

They went to lots of parties.

That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.

HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).

This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..

Please “bear” that in mind when reading my descriptions.

Here we have a 1966 original UK 7" single on the prestigious Doctor Bird label, number DB 1024.

The selections are "My Love For You" by Joe White And Chuck (Chuck Josephs of Chuck And Dobby) and "Cocktails For Two" by Baba Brooks Recording Band featuring Sammy Ismay (he played sax on many recordings including some by Byron Lee).

Released in the UK in 1966, these are in fact Sonia Pottinger productions for the Gayfeet label, released in Jamaica in 1965.

"My Love For You" which is nominally the "A" side is remarkable in that it is a Reggae toon IN THREE FOUR TIME! It's a waltz, with a certain amount of Reggae Reggae Sauce added.

The "B" side, as so often happens with Reggae and Ska singles, is definitely the more enjoyable one. It features Sammy Ismay honking through the tune that many of us know best from the 1940's Spike Jones version. His tone is a mile wide and he has that rare gift of sounding deliciously slightly flat and yet bang on the note at the same time (rather like folk singer Ewan MacColl who managed to sing sharp and flat simultaneously).

This lovely B side is the side you want it for!

Conditionwise, it is not perfect, but it IS perfectly collectable.

There are a few light storage scratches/marks which do not matter a hill o' beans. The "Cocktails" side is by far the cleanest side. There is an audible crackle or two at the start of the "A" side, but after that it plays very well. The "B" side plays well throughout. With the "mono" button pressed it sounds a darn sight better than it looks, and in fact, it don't look too bad either.

Let's call Joe And Chuck a good solid VG or thereabouts, and call "Cocktails" a very strong VG or better which (because it is cut so LOUD) sounds a grade higher than that.

You will find it a useful addition to your DJ box.

Buy now, before the inevitable Zombie apocalypse.

 I am not a dealer.

I am just a very old bloke thinning out his lifetime collection of STUFF before the floor collapses (or I do).

I'm selling most of this stuff for much less

than I paid for it.

What a great business plan (I don't think)!

I am certainly NOT INTERESTED IN PROFIT..

..and indeed, seldom make any!

What little profit I do make goes to help

a very splendid Wildlife Rescue Charity.

The item in the photograph is the item you will get.

I have described everything to the best of my ability, and it looks in very collectable condition to me.

Please check the photographs to decide for yourself.

NO OVERSEAS bidders please.
