It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please bear that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have an original Jamaican issue, on Sure Shot records, of a fine Reggae/Rocksteady original. It’s The Melodians With Tommy McCook and The Supersonics performing “The Last Train”.
My good friend Mr “Diz” Kogz lists it as “Last Train To Expo '67”, but shows a label shot looking exactly the same as this one here.
The “B” side is an instrumental entitled “Expo” by Tommy McCook and The Supersonics. The number is 27594.
I am very fond of The Melodians. Boney M’s horrible travesty of their original “Rivers Of Babylon” breaks my heart.
(Also Whitey Hunstanton’s yowling version of Dolly’s utterly perfect “I Will Always Love You” but that’s another story).
This record plays OK (see red notes above) but is far from perfect. It has many, many small scratches (plus a couple of slightly bigger ones) from being kept in a box with a lot of other sleeveless singles. Both sides play without hop, skip or jump.
I would judge both sides as being about a VG. It’s cut very LOUD so it sounds OK.
It will fill the floor at any skinhead’s blues-party, sophisticated soiree with cucumber sandwiches, or divorce-related revelry.
If you buy more than one item you might qualify for a massive postage discount.
