Description
Regina Spektor made her 2009 album with four producers who had almost nothing in common, and somehow it holds together. Jeff Lynne brings the widescreen sixties pop of Blue Lips and Folding Chair, Mike Elizondo and David Kahne handle the piano songs, and Jacknife Lee pushes Machine into something cold and mechanical that still sounds unlike anything else she has recorded.
Underneath the production is the same writer who came up through the New York anti folk scene. Laughing With is a song about God delivered without a shred of sarcasm, Eet is the one everyone hums without knowing the words, and Human Of The Year turns a funeral into a slow motion parade. Her voice does its usual trick of switching from conversational to operatic mid line.
