On Blue Goose Records
This is the first album by Crumb and his Cheap Suits, recorded in Oakland and Berkeley California in 1974. It features Robert on Banjo and Vocals. He also shares some of the writing credits, and of course he also did the cover, which features some of his illustrations – mainly on the back cover of the LP. I bought my this copy at a record fair, just because it was Crumb, and I wanted the cover art, and I guess I was curious as to what it was gonna sound like….
The cover is in overall good condition, but does have a couple of marks, Especially on the back where there are some coffee stains? - see photo. There is a bit of bad damage to the spine ( bottom left couple of inches ). The edges are a bit tatty here and there. The record looks in pretty good nick, no scratches, marks, jumps etc, - but see recording quality below.
So what about the music ?.
Twee, twiddling banjos and mandolins, with guitar, accordion, bass fiddle and the occasional musical saw. Tackling a few standards like ‘I’ll see you in my Dreams’, plus other stuff written by the band.
The original recording quality isn’t great, it sounds like maybe they recorded it in one take, on a two track, in a shed or a chicken hut someplace. Of course its all gonna depend on your tastes. ( I prefer indi rock) I made a cd copy of it and occasionally play it in the background and enjoy it. If you buy this because you like Crumbs illustrations and think the musics gonna get you trucking round the room then forget it. However, if you were at a party, had a few drinks, and then the Band came on and played this stuff live it would be fantastic.
I will also send you a copy of the CD copy I made, so you need never play the actual record – unless of course you wanna. I’ll send this by myHermes tracked. I put £8 as post costs, and if its less than this I will refund you the difference.
