Robert Wyatt – Rock Bottom 1974 UK Virgin V 2017 First Rock, Avantgarde, Prog
Rock Bottom is the second solo album by former Soft Machine drummer Robert Wyatt. It was released in 1974 by Virgin Records and produced by Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason. It was recorded following Wyatt's 1973 fall which left him a paraplegic.
The unlaminated matt finish card sleeve was printed and made in England and is very conservatively graded as VG+. There is very little rub wear along the bottom edge but this is very acceptable. The pinched spine is clearly readable but the matt white background is discoloured due to age/handling. The word 'Wyatt' is partially obscured as a result although it is still readable. The entry edge has very little wear. Ring wear is apparent. Both the front and back of the matt white sleeve show some age related/handling discolouration which would be expected with a sleeve of this finish. Overall, is a very acceptable example.
The original paper inner is undamaged but does have age related discolouration. Graded as VG+.
The first press vinyl without doubt grades as EX+. It has been played but not to any great extent. The colour Virgin labels are clean. There are no spindle marks. On play grading there was minimal static on the run in but nothing else really substantial - perhaps the odd faint pop or click during the remainder of the album including between the tracks. Certainly nothing which would spoil the enjoyment of the record when listening at high volume. It plays superbly with very strong audio. The surface is very clean, glossy and shiny, a great first press copy.
Likely to be rare in this condition.
