Description

THE ROLLING STONES - HOT ROCKS 1964-1971 - LONDON 2PS 606/7. THIS IS THE MISPRESSING RELEASE QUICKLY WITHDRAWN AND A GREAT EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE WHO HAD ONE JOB TO DO AND BOTCHED IT. THE VERSIONS OF "BROWN SUGAR" AND "WILD HORSES" INCLUDED HERE WERE NEVER MEANT FOR RELEASE AND ARE CONSIDERABLY DIFFERENT THAN THE ONES USED IN ALL SUBSEQUENT PRESSINGS. HEARING SUCH INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THESE TWO STAPLE STONES TUNES YOU'VE HEARD THOUSANDS OF TIMES WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. IT IS AMAZING THAT WITH ALL THE OLD STONES MATERIAL RELEASED THESE TWO VERSIONS HAVE STILL NEVER BEEN OFFICIALLY RELEASED. THE STONES REALLY DON'T WANT YOU TO HEAR THEM!  THE GATEFOLD COVER IS NEAR MINT AND HAS THE PLURB STICKER ATTACHED. THE VINYL IS OVERALL VG+ WITH THE DISC WITHOUT THE TWO SOUGHT AFTER SONGS (SIDES 1&2) BEING VG++. SIDES 3&4 ARE VG+ WITH SOME VERY LIGHT MARKS, MOSTLY WISPS AND SOFT NEEDLE DROPS. THE TWO MAIN SONGS PLAY GREAT, EASILY VG++.

SIDE 4 HAS XZAL  11018, SHELLY 11-18-71 HAND ETCHED INTO THE DEADWAX WITH STERLING STAMPED AND LH ETCHED. THERE IS A "2" BELOW STERLING.

THIS HAS THE ORIGINAL LONDON INNERS IN DECENT SHAPE AND A COPY (SOMEWHERE AROUND HERE...) OF 21 REASONS WHY... THAT WILL BE INCLUDED. WE'VE SEEN MANY HUNDREDS OF COPIES OF HOT ROCKS AND IT TOOK A LONG TIME TO FIND THIS ONE. WE'VE SEEN SUBSEQUENT PRESSING WITH DATES FROM THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER, 1971 ETCHED INTO SIDE 4, SO THIS VERSION WAS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR THREE WEEKS AT MOST BEFORE THEY CAUGHT THE ERROR AND SOMEONE GOT CANNED! THIS IS PRESSED ON  MEDIUM THICK VINYL AND WE'VE SEEN LATER PRESSINGS THAT ARE ON MUCH THICKER VINYL. LONDON WAS INCONSISTENT WITH THEIR QC (OBVIOUSLY!)

STOLEN FROM A RECENTLY COMPLETED EBAY AUCTION: "The versions included here are truly different. It is not just a case of different mixes – these are DIFFERENT TAKES altogether. You will detect a major difference between the official versions and those included here within five seconds from the start of the songs.   This take of "Brown Sugar" has rhythm section pushed all the way into the foreground, to the point where bass and drums are literally in-your-face. Bobby Keyes' famous sax solo in the middle of the song is COMPLETELY MISSING;  Lead guitar solo also appears to be missing; only Keith Richard’s rhythm guitar is there, but Mick Taylor’s fretwork appears to be either missing or is mixed-out beyond detection. Vocal track seems to be the same as the released version.

On "Wild Horses", Mick Taylor’s guitar, notably the intricate soloing by the end of the song, is also missing; the song appears to be somewhat shorter than the released version; but the single biggest - and most obvious - difference is in Mick Jagger`s vocal track. It is absolutely clear that this is a COMPLETELY different take of the vocal track than the album version; Mick sings in a wonderfully dramatic, passionate, soulful manner – and we feel very strongly that his vocal take on this version isfar superior to the one released on regular versions of "Hot Rocks" (the same as the one released on "Sticky Fingers"). His voice here is a cross between Gram Parsons (we initially thought that this was Gram Parsons on vocals!) , Jerry Garcia, and Billie Holiday. The dude really croons his heart out. Heck, Mick can really belt out with the best of them, when he wants to (which has been less and less in recent years).

Over the years, we`ve heard many apocryphal stories about how this incredible rarity came to being: from this being an attempt by Allen Klein, the then-manager of the Rolling Stones to extract one final bit of studio material before the band established their own label, to the Stones deliberately supplying half-baked takes to Klein,  to the sheer incompetence of the pressing plant."
