A superb audiophile reissue of bassist Ron Carter’s 1961 debut as a bandleader, Where? — an adventurous early-'60s jazz session featuring an exceptional lineup that includes Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, bass clarinet and flute, Mal Waldron on piano, George Duvivier on bass and Charlie Persip on drums.
Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio, Where? catches Carter near the beginning of what would become one of the most remarkable careers in jazz. The interplay with Eric Dolphy is a particular highlight, while the program moves from the energetic “Rally” and unusual two-bass setting of “Bass Duet” to interpretations of “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise” and the title track.
This 2024 edition is part of Craft Recordings’ acclaimed Original Jazz Classics series and was produced with audiophile presentation in mind. The lacquers were cut AAA from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, with the album pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI and housed in a Tip-On jacket with obi.

Brand in its original factory seal. The shrink remains intact and the album has never been opened by us. The jacket appears excellent beneath the shrink.
Because the record remains sealed, the vinyl itself has not been visually inspected or played and is therefore not individually graded.
