Description

Roy Haynes Quartet. Out Of The Afternoon. Impulse! Records(A-23). 1962. Mono LP.

I gave away most of my LPs from the golden era of post-bop, and now I’m getting a select number of them back. To my mind, this is one of the beautiful quartet recordings of the 60s. Rahsaan Roland Kirk was always a great player, underestimated as gimmicky because he sometimes played three horns at a time. But he had a great command of his individual instruments, a tremendous repertoire, and took beautifully constructed solos. Rhythm section on this LP is also superb, featuring Tommy Flanagan on piano and the great Roy Haynes on drums.
