Description
Here's one of the most bizarre switch-out stories of 1960s American record-making. LAURIE L 3366X was issued in Canada in December 1966. It's the second single from Florida's Royal Guardsmen. Producer Phil Gernhard had already recorded the teen band's version of the song he and Dick Holler had written, SNOOPY VS. THE RED BARON, but out of fear that Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz would protest the use of his characters, Gernhard had them record a SECOND version, with the names changed, and many of the lyrics altered. It's the same song, the same track, the same chorus, but Snoopy - "a funny-looking dog with a big black nose" is now Squeaky - "a buck-toothed beaver with a gleam in his eye." Even the spoken German intro is changed to reflect the fact that the Red Baron is now Air Marshall Dummkofen.*
This single came out briefly in Canada, and didn't make a ripple. Gernhard met with Schulz and hammered out a royalty deal, "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" was released and sold more than four million copies. "Squeaky vs. the Black Knight" was quietly withdrawn and has NEVER been reissued in any form.
This copy of the mega-rare single is a solid VG or higher - there are a few visible marks, but it plays beautifully. Writing on the label (see photo). The B-side is "I Needed You."
