ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This outstanding LP from Brunswick (SXA 4521, UK Decca pressing, purple/silver label, mono, booklet included) entitled "The Glory of Cremona" features the great Ruggiero Ricci playing 15 instruments by their legendary violin makers, accompanied throughout by veteran pianist Leon Pommers. This remains one of the great violin albums of the LP era.
Recorded by Decca in New York City in 1964, the sound well captures Ricci's rich tone. Wrote T.H. in the August 1968 issue of The Gramophone: "Ricci plays 15 different great violins and the first thing you will enjoy is awallow in gorgeous violin sound. But to make it worth buying you will have to be more interested than that, for the pieces don't make a good concert programme, most of them being slowish-sensibly enough, since the object is to allow us to savour the tone of each instrument. And then your ear will identify the characteristics of these great craftsmen, Stradivari, Guarneri, the Amatis and other fabulous names You can also see the instruments in an excellent colour picture on the front of the sleeve and identify them from a diagram on the back. The original issue had a slip inserted which told you which instrument each piece is played onessential, of course; this was missing from the present copy sent to me but I understand that it will be provided. All violinists will doubtless seize upon this issue if they haven't acquired the record before: and I think most others will find it fascinating if they are interested in the different characteristics of these great violin makers."

CONDITION - PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is bumping/wear at corners, creasing, and mild discoloration, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive in appearance – overall, a very good collector’s copy.
The condition of the full-size 4-page booklet is EXCELLENT. Although it is not quite as bright white as it must formerly have been, the pages are crisp and really there are no flaws to speak of – a superb collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are spindle trails and surface marks. In terms of sound, although there is some occasional light surface noise, in general the playback is quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
