Permanent Waves catches Rush just before Moving Pictures made them untouchable—and with a little more danger still in the room. “The Spirit of Radio” blasts through the speakers like a transmission from another planet: Alex Lifeson’s guitars sparking, Geddy Lee’s bass running loose, Neil Peart refusing to let the song sit still for even a second.
“Freewill” turns philosophy into a fist-pumping anthem, “Jacob’s Ladder” climbs from a slow, ominous crawl into full progressive-rock thunder, and “Natural Science” closes the record as a three-part voyage through evolution, entropy, and everything in between.
