A FEW LIGHT SURFACE RUB MARKS UNDER ANGLED LIGHT BY THE SPINDLE HOLE. THE HIGH LUSTER VINYL BLANK WITH SOME LIGHT AND FINE SURFACE RUB MARKS AND SOME LIGHT SURFACE PAPER SLEEVE STORAGE CONTACT IMPRESSIONS FROM SHELVING. UNDER BRIGHT ANGLED LIGHT AND ASSIDUOUS EXAMINATION, SOME EVIDENCE OF A FEW LIGHT AND FAINT SURFACE RUB SCUFF LINES. I'VE TEST PLAYED THIS LP ON THE VPI TURNTABLE AND PROFESSIONAL SOUND SYSTEM AND IT WAS A WONDERFUL PLAY WITHOUT NOTICE OF THE ABOVE ITEMS. SOUNDED MINT MINUS HERE. CLEAR, VIBRANT AND QUITE PRESENT ALL AROUND WITH ALMOST SILENT DEAD WAX BETWEEN THE TRACKS. AN IMPRESSIVE AURAL EXPERIENCE EVEN THOUGH NOT IN DEEP GROOVE FORMAT.

ONE OF THE RARER LPS TO COME OUT OF HIDING IN A WHILE AND WHEN IT DOES MAKE AN APPEARANCE NOW FETCHES UPWARDS OF 400.

Larry Young who like most organists originally sounded close to Jimmy Smith, took a big step away from the organ's dominant influence on this adventurous and colorful set, which was his debut as a leader for Blue Note. Performing with a quartet also including tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, guitarist Grant Green and drummer Elvin Jones, Young performs four of his originals plus Green's "Plaza de Toros." Other than the blues "Backup," the music is fairly complex, grooving in its own fashion and showing that Young was quite aware of John Coltrane's modal excursions.

Few, if any, free jazz saxophonists have approached music with the same degree of intellectual rigor as Sam Rivers; just as few have managed to maintain a high level of creativity over a long life. Rivers plays with remarkable technical precision and a manifest knowledge of his materials. His sound is hard and extraordinarily well-centered, his articulation sharp, and his command of the tenor saxophone complete. Rivers' playing sometimes has an unremitting seriousness that can be extremely demanding, even off-putting. Nevertheless, the depth of his artistry is considerable. Rivers is as substantial a player as avant-garde jazz has produced.
