Rarity & Info: Very Rare: this using the term ‘rare’ correctly, unlike for Beatles and Stones albums that sold by the million. Within the UK Polydor catalogue, this is amongst the very rarest albums ever made. It sold in minuscule numbers and has always been a highly sort-after one-off progressive rarity. Not only that, the few that do surface are seemingly in less than wonderful conditions. The cover especially is vulnerable and prone to all forms of wear and the record often played heavily. For the tiny few who discovered this initially, most played it freely, and why not?, it’s a lovely album and many regard it as a true ‘lost’ progressive classic. To find one of these so little used with a near mint cover is a massive achievement and this one should thrill even the specialist and highly discerning prog-rock collector. My first ever copy of this album and I am certain I will never find another one that will even come close to this. It could conceivably be one of the best surviving copies in the world, a bold statement I realise, but with so few sold and even pressed, the others around will not be rushing forward too quickly.

Sandrose were a French progressive band, initially called Eden Rose with the same members then adding female vocalist Rose Podwojny. She has a strong voice that works around the splendid musicianship, a quality band in their infancy, but the embryo failed to flourish with more albums. Blending elements of folk and jazz into their musical structures, Podwojny’s sings in English and there is some superb guitar-work by Jean-Pierre Alarcen. Along with organ and swathing Mellotron, this is a beautiful set that showed bags of promise, but sadly it remained a one-off. Comparisons? well the debut album by Earth and Fire on Nepentha springs to mind, another rare prog classic, this I feel rarer even than that. An album that gets better-and-better the more you hear it. Needless to say, I downloaded this to disc for my personal use so I can enjoy it anywhere, and why not?, it’s not that easy to find on CD either. This type of female vocal fronted progressive rock is really my thing, and like so many others, they totally bypassed me all those years ago. I guess the promotion was limited and sales reflected the fact. This supremely clean record easily makes the grade for the clinical digital transfer. The term ‘lost’ classic certainly applies here and clearly this is a rare opportunity not to be missed.

For this record I have to break my usual protocol of putting very low starting prices on my listings. I do not sell for minimum fixed profits, I prefer to let the market dictate what a record is worth. But for a rarer one like this, I do have to protect myself with a safety net. For a dealer to have any chance to get a copy of this massively elusive album in this type of condition, it usually means a vast outlay. When offered this, I simply could not turn it down and it truly did mean a substantial sum had to be paid. But I love offering the rarest and best albums I can possibly locate, often ones that are not seen often and rarely so fine. This is a case in point. Often the very rarest records often mean they did not sell because the music was indifferent or mediocre at best. Not the case for this one, this is a true prog-rock gem and it has eluded most collectors since it’s UK issue back in 1973. I never put reserves on my items, most potential customers and collectors do not enjoy bidding ‘blind’, they like to know the amount they need to bid to have a chance to win, not bid into the void not knowing what the hidden reserve is. So I will put my very minimum selling price as the starting bid, if it fails to meet this seen ‘reserve’, then I am more than happy to keep it or show specialist dealers who I am sure will snap my hands off to take it. I feel sure this will have rarely been seen or offered on Ebay, especially in this outstanding condition. The cover is little short of new and the record plays almost the same and looks fantastic. A massive, possibly one-off opportunity to own this UK original like this – specialist, prog collectors, please apply.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): a single unlaminated format with matt finish. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front: A little very fine and faint surface creasing near the bottom right corner and tiny one near the top right as a semi-crease. Nothing else to fault on this near reference quality cover. As clean and fresh as when made with no rubbing, ring marks or other creases worthy of note. The ones mentioned are tiny and ultra fine and light anyway.

Cover Back: Little short of Mint, the merest hint of a crease on the same bottom corner as above, but look very hard. Totally devoid of ringwear or even record impression – remarkable, but true.

Top Edge: Practically as made and very straight and uncrushed.

Bottom Edge: Very slight, faint patchy rubbing, as little as is almost possible on a resting edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, practically devoid of compression, a small trace near the top corner only. All text is perfect and unworn, any discolouration, very mild indeed.

Corners: All four crisp and sharp with any tip rubs tiny..

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this very rare, original UK 70’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find much better. Those that know this cover, will of course know how prone to wear it is. Few will survive the years quite as clean and fresh as this one, of that, I have no doubts at all. This beautiful item should please practically all collectors needing this elusive item.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): The original Polydor inner is date coded 303 (1973) as it should be of course. It has aged little with minimal traces of any discolour and just one corner semi-crease. Both window circles are neat and crisp with the lining intact with just a small pressure spot on the very centre. All edges unsplit with no repairs, all evidence reitterates how few times this record has been removed or likely played.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) / EXCELLENT(++): side two has a few light surface marks seen under light, which I am certain were present from day one in manufacture, they have a certain regular ‘pattern’ that make this more than obvious. They are small and faint and have NO SOUND whatsoever anyway and this superb record retains the shine, cleaness and lustre of a nearly new copy. A visual example that is as fresh and intense black as when first issued back in 73. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This ‘lost’ prog classic plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this UK original I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first ever copy. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – do not lose this one.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
