Sandy Denny/Margie Joseph – AFRTS Transcription 12” vinyl P-13791 (1973)
A mega-mega-rare AFRTS transcription disc, and one of the ‘Holy Grail’ vinyls for serious collectors; they are possibly even harder to find than test pressings, promos or even BBC transcriptions.
AFRTS (American Forces Radio and Television Service) transcribed material for use on their worldwide network of military bases and only precious few have survived the years, and to find a British artist featured is even rarer.
Having wound up the superb Fotheringay in late 1970 Sandy Denny embarked on a solo career, with Joe Boyd having the lucrative US market in his sights. The promotion machine did attract a lot of pre-release interest for her second solo album ‘Sandy’, and this is a product of those efforts (the album was not released in USA by A&M until early 1973).
Side A is a selection of tracks from ‘Sandy’.
Side B features the soul legend Margie Joseph and is sampled from the self-titled Atlantic SD7248, her third LP.
It is in stereo.
The vinyl is not the heaviest in the world (122g) but an audio test (on a mid-range Pioneer) demonstrated just a little surface noise in quieter passages almost as expected from a vinyl of this age. There are strictly no pops or jumps and just a very occasional light click. So for reproduction overall it has to rate as a solid VG+ maybe even EX- Visually side A is EX- and side B has three light (parallel) surface scuffs that don’t sound so a VG/VG+.
Labels are EX- with no writing or graffiti.
The standard brown card sleeve has had one corner cut and then taped – this clearly happened many, many years ago as the tape is a little discoloured (see photo). So that makes it maybe G/G+? Interestingly the front cover is marked ‘Country’ which hardly describes either artiste, although to be fair the pedal steel on some of the tracks on ‘Sandy’ could give that impression.
But all round it is in very nice, clean condition.
Its rarity alone makes it a very desirable collectors’ piece and you will have to wait a very long time, if ever at all, for the opportunity to get another.
