TOP COPY 1st ISSUE!?
Amazing Late '50s Hawaiian SURFING artwork cover!!

(My life-long best friend is from Hawaii; his Dad was in the advertising biz in Honolulu from late 1940's - early '60s
...and this cover art is VERY much like things that came straight out of his agency. PURE 1950's HAWAIIANA)

One of the more obscure ...and delightful, marvels from the short-lived 49th State catalog -renowned for their red vinyl 10" LPs of numerous Hawaiian artists. This Island Christmas LP was a kamaina party favorite in its day and almost never turns up in such pristine condition. Nice enough to have a full luster, unfaded and crisp front cover art slick, unmarked - but the back, which is unprinted, pure white ...is just that: pure white -no soil, smudges, discoloration spots or any marks.

The accompanying KANAKA CHRISTMAS CARD (© Emery Nemethy 1952) was tucked inside the album. It is on a soft, textured off-white thick paper, one sheet that folds in 4 parts (SEE PHOTOS) and has a "VeeBee HAWAII" trademark (Aunty Bea, one of the main forces behind this LP is actually "Bea Van Osten") and Emery Nemethy wrote 2 of the tracks on this LP as well, so I know the card and the LP are definitely related, indeed intrinsically connected.

The long, full-side piece: "Santa's Gone Hawaiian!" that takes up Side 1 is a wonderful, whimsical and delightfully naive story with pieces of song entertwined, much like Brian Wilson's Mt. Vernon and Fairway bonus 45 from the renowned Beach Boys Holland album -but utterly deep island syle. It's a delightful seasonal insight into Hawaiian culture told in a warm wahini voice.

On side 2, the three cuts by Genoa Keawe are wonderful classic Hapa Haola recordings -- vintage era songs of blended Hawaiian and mainland musical traditions and language. Janet Hilo does a quintessential Hawaiian song-story ...backed by The Hula Maids; the two cuts by Lucky Luck are classic Christmas stories made Hawaiian and told in deep pidgin ...nothing slick about this LP; it's a sincere glimpse at Christmas in Hawaii.

SIDE 1
1. Santa's Gone Hawaiian!
'Christmastime in Hawaii. . . Honolulu. . .
the beach at Waikiki . . . a like Christmastime
anywhere else, and yet so very different  . . .
Santa Claus finds it a actually springtime at
Christmatime in Hawaii'
TELL STORY by Aunty Bea, MUSIC & LYRICS by Imgard K'Aluli

3. Silent Night (sung in Hawaiian) - Genoa Keawe
4. Da Very First Christmas - Lucky Luck

6. Christmas Luau - Janet Hilo w/Genoa Keawe & Her Hula Maids

ONLINE REVIEW
"This recording is truly the finest vintage Hawaiian Christmas music ever released! And it’s FUN too! Lucky Luck will crack you up with his comical Pidgin’ English dialect parodies. But watch out! …He may make you cry too when he tells you the touching story about “a keiki (child) in Betlahema (Bethlehem) who goin’ be Alii (King) some day”. These are the songs and the stories that have been lovingly passed down, decade after decade, each Christmas season, through many generations of Hawaiians.

"Who can resist a smile when you hear those classic words: “Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say, On a bright Hawaiian Christmas day, That’s the Island greeting that we send to you, From the land where palm trees sway”. Genoa Keawe’s voice is a symbol of traditional Hawaiian musical expression. And with her beautiful & haunting version of “Silent Night” sung in the Hawaiian language, she delivers to you the true message of a Hawaiian Christmas. Let’s not forget the gleeful Hawaiian language translation of “Jingle Bells”, and that traditional favorite “Christmas Luau”: “with plenty kaukau, Opihi and salmon, and steaming hot laulau” – it’s great!!

And last but not least there is the only available recording of Aunty Bea and Irmgard Farden K'Aluli performing the rollicking & uniquely Hawaiian Christmas story and songs of “Santa’s Gone Hawaiian” with her gifted family siblings. This is a “must-have” Christmas fantasy for the young & the young at heart! A true one-of-a-kind classic!"

It would be impossible to find a Cleaner original of this Hawaiian Christmas treasure
...especially still completely intact with a MINT card insert.
