Originally known as the Savoy Brown Blues Band, their 1969 single "Train to Nowhere" (with singer Chris Youlden), was viewed by many as the last gasp of the blues scene in Great Britain. Although Savoy Brown never reached much acclaim in their home nation, they developed a loyal core following in the United States, due to songs such as "I'm Tired" (from their album, A Step Further), a driving, melodic song. They were one of the bands that UK Decca (US London/Parrot) stuck with through the lean times until they started selling records (it took 4 or 5 albums until they started to sell in the US). In the late 1960s and 1970s, the band managed to penetrate the Billboard Hot 100. Superstardom perpetually evaded them, perhaps in part because of their frequent lineup changes, but despite that, Hellbound Train was a big album for them in the US!!!.
While the band is still active today, only Kim Simmonds has stayed since the beginning. Guitarist "Lonesome" Dave Peverett, bassist Tone Stevens, and drummer Roger Earl went on to form Foghat. Original member and harmonica player, John O'Leary, is still active on the British blues circuit with The John O'Leary Band. Savoy Brown's first album, Shake Down, featured lead vocalist Bryce Portius. Portius was one of the first black blues musicians to be a part of a British rock band. Another singer, Dave Walker, would later join Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath. Their bassists included Andy Pyle, later with The Kinks!!.
Savoy Brown also provided an outlet for the keyboardist and guitarist, Paul Raymond, who later went on to join UFO.
The absolute rarity of this album is not to be underestimated. It hardly ever surfaces nowadays. This is an absolutely gorgeous slab of early quality DECCA vinyl which is in splendid condition!! This has a lovely deep glossy sheen!! Hauntingly beautiful songcraft!!! Immense quality psychblues/prog album that ticks all the right boxes and incredibly hard to find. I have twentyfive years experience in grading. It doesn't get much better than this!!
You won't easily find this ultra rare LP !!! It is a genuinely very scarce item that will shoot up in price, esp. since Chinese collectors are starting to get in now. Get it while you still can!
excellent UK 1972
1st press record
the surfaces display blazing factory-fresh gloss without any hairlines under an intense light.
The audio is supreme, no clicks, no jumps etc.!!!
****ELUSIVE PSYCH/PROGMONSTER!!!****PERPLEXING SONGCRAFT!!!***AN INSPIRATION TO MANY SUBSEQUENT TOPACTS!!!***
!!!!A VERY HARD FIND!!! Most have been bought up by collectors!! This is hardly offered these days!!
In all my years this is only the third time I have come across this BLUESPROGMONSTER. Sensational sound quality, I have played this through in its entirety and it was a great joy!!! NO skips or jumps. NO clicks or crackle, this is really a stunning heavy glossy jet black vinyl .The audio is impeccable. Inspected under an intense lightsource and angled.
Vinyl: EX+ possibly NM . A sensational find!!! This looks awesome! Still retaining its original deep glossy sheen from new!! LOOK SUPERB! I can't see a blemish! Any that could possibly be seen would be whispy sleeve removal marks only!!! I have played this in FULL twice over> fantastic audio, a joy to listen to!! This is the true official 1st press. I first played for a general listen and a second time for a more detailed observation. This is near to pristine. There are NO marks or hairlines and look like it was bought yesterday. This vinyl retains its fabulous deep glossy sheen and has clearly been looked after. A top vinyl!! Fantastic songcraft!! I am very glad to be able to report that this is a fine slab of vinyl without any problems at all and as such worthy of inclusion of any great prog collection. Of course NO jumps/clicks/skips etc.
Gatefold sleeve: VG++ to EX. Matt. Light edgewear and mainly to the top of the spine. A small colourfill top right and top left. Otherwise a great sleeve without any doodling, writing defacing etc. I think it will be a very long time before this super album will come around with again more takers than ever before.
Labels: EX++. Only two of the faintest spindle traces indicating this has not been played more than 2 or 3 times.
Inner sleeve: This is the original poly lined blue and white Stereo Decca sleeve with (no) splits or tears just light creasing/staining with age in excellent condition!!
***This is a unique prime investment opportunity!!! Finding this album in any condition at all is nearly impossible!!! This is a great and seriously collectable super album!! You will buy into a piece of bluesprog core history.***
This is a unique investment opportunity!!! The next psych album to go completely through the roof. Finding this album in any condition at all is nearly impossible so late in the day. Get this while you still can. This value of the album is only going to go one way ... up and up ... until it will be totally unavailable at all for a reasonable price.
Important : International postage will be registered and insured if over GBP 45.00. Please wait for my invoice before paying. Postage will be according to Royal Mail rates. Postage is NOT a money spinning exercise for me.
Though there are rarely ever any problems with my items, I always try my very best to describe everything exactly! PLEASE REMEMBER to contact me FIRST, if you have any problems at all, before you leave feedback and star ratings, so I get a chance to turn any negative experience into a positive one! I can always happily sort anything out for you, if you let me know you have a problem! This way no one has to leave Negative/Neutral feedback - and we both walk away happy! Similarly with the amount of stars, anything less than a full 5 * rating is effectively detrimental to a seller's rating as lower ratings will incur higher Final Value Fees and lower priority in the bidlists eventually making it unattractive to list items on Ebay at all. I know of at least one major previous Ebay seller who has decided not to list via Ebay again. Please do NOT bid if you cannot give me at least 1 chance to sort everything out to your FULL satisfaction in the unlikely event of a problem. Thanks again!!
