Label Conditions: Generally clean and attractive, a little dulling with around moderate spindle marks. The record plays very well indeed and my play-grade proved very enjoyable with little unwanted.

Brief Info: Album number eight for the British blues-rock band. A band that went through many different line-ups and they remained quite prolific during the 1970s. This is another highly rated album. All I heard by them I have enjoyed, and this failed to disappoint. Savoy Brown were not the biggest selling band, even within this genre, their albums are not that easily found. This is a lovely, very early pressed original that plays impressively. The title song has the very abrupt ending. Again featuring spectacular colourful cover artwork. It will not be easy to find this gem better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to, a rim rub on the back as-seen, not a great deal else to fault overall. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes the polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: The colourful artwork remains fresh and vibrant with no fading or sticker issues. The front especially is very impressive with hardly any rubbing and any creasing little, fine and light. The back has a moderate rim rub as stated and seen, but little else. This spectacular artwork demands laminate, but more unusually for Decca, this one did not have it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault on the black and white cartoon inside, any grubbiness or set-off gentle and light.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with any hint of rubbing very light and equally patchy.

Bottom Edges: Light patchy rubbing that is rarely avoided on unprotected storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both edges are naturally open with no adhesive evidence on the front at all, so this is is how it was manufactured. The front edges are sharp and very neat, these naturally protected by the back which are a little wider. The back ones have thickened a little in places, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal hint of compression. The inside has a raised fold hinge which means the spine will form a natural central recess meaning text can sink, but this practically avoided with any central line fine and very faint. This is folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is present and unworn, also superbly centred as seen with no fading to this vulnerable surface.

Corners: Any tip rubs are mainly small and light with very fine or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: The rim rub apart, a very strong all-round example of this quite elusive and wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive colourful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the Decca inner sleeve remains little aged with only a little gentle darkening of the paper. Two pristine window circles and the polylining clear and fresh. Minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine. A copy with relatively modest on all the evidence with any surface marks light and quite wispy as seen under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality blues-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and wish due care and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
