Formed in 1966 in London they were part of the British blues boom. They were originally known as The Savoy Brown Blues Band and recorded four songs for Purdah (two of which were put out on a 45, which is now rare), before signing to Decca. Kim Simmonds was the only ever present member in an ever-changing line-up and his brother Harry was the band's manager in those early days. After recording Shake Down, which was confined to a strictly blues format Martin Stone departed to join The Action and Leo Mannings left to form the Brunning Sunflower Blues Band. Chris Youlden also replaced Brice Portius on vocals for the follow-up Getting To The Point. Their finest moment is usually considered to be Train To Nowhere from the Blue Matter album, which augmented their earlier blues format with brass. Thereafter, with the British blues boom past its prime, the group's sound veered towards a kinda boogie-based rock with blues overtones. Having made little impression in the UK they also looked increasingly towards the US where constant touring brought them considerable success. By now Bob Hall had left to join Leo Mannings in the Sunflower Blues Band and after the release of the Raw Silence album Chris Youlden also left to go solo recording two albums for Deram. Usually appearing on stage in a bowler hat and monacle (and later in topper and tails) he had been the central tenet of their stage show in the late sixties. This role next fell to Dave Peverett for the Looking In album, but in December 1970 Peverett, Earl and Stevens all left to form Foghat and Kim Simmonds had to assemble an entirely new line-up. They embarked on a long US tour on which they were a bigger draw than Rod Stewart and The Faces and The Grease Band. This line-up (with some modifications) continued to record albums, which enjoyed considerable success in the US but passed largely unheralded in Britain. After the release of Lion's Share, vocalist Dave Walker departed for Fleetwood Mac and Dave Bidwell died of a heroin overdose. Simmonds next vocalist, Jackie Lyndon, had been a sorta coffee bar rocker in the early sixties. This line-up recorded Jack The Toad and lasted until January 1974. Then Simmonds put together yet another line-up featuring three lead guitars. By now Simmonds had moved the entire operation to the US and three US-only releases were recorded in the mid-seventies with Ian Ellis (ex-Clouds) on bass and Tom Farnell (briefly of Fairport Convention) on drums. Both the Decca and See For Miles compilations concentrate on their finer moments from their most successful 1968-71 period. The latter compilation has the bonus of detailed sleeve-notes from Roger Dopson. The C5 compilation covers the whole of their career with Decca from 1967-1974. It includes many of their finest moments like Highway Blues, Hellbound Train and Train To Nowhere. Back in 1969 they appeared on Decca's World Of Blues Power! sampler singing Taste And Try Before You Buy and Someday People and they returned on Vol. 2 of the same series the following year with Don't Turn Me From Your Door and She's Got A Ring In His Nose, And A Ring On Her Hand. Train To Nowhere also appears on Wowie Zowie! World Of Progressive Music. More recently Broken Dreams, Vol. 6 (LP) has given Taste And Try Before You Buy, Someday People and Walking By Myself a further airing. Savoy Brown are a prime example, then, of a British band, who achieved enormous popularity in the States whilst attracting little attention at home.
