Description
This is an opportunity to bid for a rare early Columbia 1st label (blue/silver) of this recording. It features Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra in a programme of opera overtures. Sleevenotes on the back are by John Warrack and are dated 1961. The matrix numbers engraved on the run-out are: YAX 687-4 & YAX 688-6. The outer sleeve is the original Garrod & Lofthouse, flip-back, laminated on the front. Disc and outer sleeve were both made in Britain. The inner sleeve is early EMI printed paper / polythene liner that may not be original.
The LP will be supplied with a protective 50g PVC sleeve. The record will be packaged in a Defenda LP mailer made of corrugated cardboard, with additional bubble-wrap.
ProgrammeWeber: Overture, Der Freischutz Weber: Overture, Euryanthe Weber: Overture, Oberon Humperdinck: Overture & Dream Pantomime, Hansel und Gretel Gluck, revised Wagner: Overture, Iphigenie en Aulide
Condition of Disc The disc is flat and the playing surfaces are glossy and clean. As with all discs of this age, it would probably benefit from machine-cleaning. Centre labels are free of writing, sticky labels or stains; and show no signs of "squirreling" or spindle wear around the centre hole. After the disc has been wiped with a damp cloth, it plays beautifully with negligible loss of high-end frequency and only occasional surface crackle in places. On Side 1 at 11 o'clock there is a faint non-sounding surface mark approximately 2cm long. Overall, I have graded the disc conservatively as ‘VG+’ (Record Collector).
Condition of Sleeve The 51 year-old sleeve is in VG condition, with only minimal shelf/handling wear at the opening and corners. There is negligible creasing, ring-wear or lifting of laminate and no writing, stains, tears or sticky labels. The front opening edge has a darkened vertical strip approximately 1 cm wide: probably caused by extended exposure to bright light. The unlaminated back is a little grubby, but all text is clearly readable. The spine is clearly readable, apart from damage to 2 letters in Klemperer's name.
The price for international signed-for postage includes full compensation cover up to £500; economy postage at lower cost is available at buyer's risk.
