Chicago poet-musician Gil Scott-Heron's early 70s run on Flying Dutchman yielded some of his sharpest work, and this 1974 compilation gathers material from Small Talk At 154th And Lennox, Pieces Of A Man and Free Will, tracing the shift from bare-bones spoken word to fuller jazz-soul arrangements. It also folds in the version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" issued by Flying Dutchman, restoring the sequencing listeners knew in the mid 70s. Heard together, the selections underline his knack for stitching street reportage to blues-leaned grooves in ways few others managed at the time. Ace revived the compilation on vinyl in the UK in 2017, and this new edition brings back the original gatefold packaging.
