1966 DALLAS GARAGE CLASSIC
TRAIN KEPT A ROLLIN’
It must have really been something to have seen the Yardbirds on their tour across the US in 1967. The band was still in that space where they were inventing a new, heavier psychedelia, but hadn’t yet transformed into Led Zeppelin. Along the way they played in Dallas and really impressed Scotty McKay.
Scotty was a former member of Gene Vincent’s band and had cut quite a few local records with some success. His stuff started out as pop, but was getting heavier all the time. His 1966 single “Here Comes Batman” was a local hit on KLIF and was pointing him in a new direction. This Yardbirds influenced next single was the tipping point.
Here you’ve got Scotty McKay being backed up by the Exotics – although they’re not credited on the record. The Yardbirds were doing a version of the old Tiny Bradshaw blues number “Train Kept A Rollin’” in their live set. Scotty knew a hit in the making and cut this smokin’ hot version.
It hit the streets on June 24, 1967 and went up to #10 on the KLIF charts. It’s become one of those must-have garage records from Texas, a real guitar-bending classic.
