SCRATCH THE SUPER APE
by The Upsetters on the Jamaican UPSETTER label.
This is an original  and authentic 1976 Jamaican pressing of what is rightly considered to be one of Lee Perry's masterworks - the awesome 'SUPER APE' album, featuring a killer selection of dubs featuring the unlisted vocal talents of The Heptones, Prince Jazzbo and the I-Threes. The track sequencing is in a completely different order to the eventual UK pressing and some of the titles are also slightly different. They are:
Side 1 - 1. Dread Lion              2. Zion Blood              3. Three In One              4. Curley Dub              5. Patience Dub
Side 2 - 1. Super Ape              2. Croaking Lizard              3. Black Vest              4. Underground Root              5. Dub Along
The label states that it is Produced & Directed by Upsetter L. Perry. The album has no catalogue number but the matrix/run-out IDs are LP-8109A/LP-8109B. There is no writing or stickers on either the labels or the cover. The cover shows signs of wear and tear but there are no splits at all on the spine or outer edges. The condition of the vinyl is VG+ with a couple of inaudible scuff marks and the usual pock-marked Jamaican pressing - it plays absolutely fine. It comes in its original polythene sleeve. 
The album first appeared in the UK as a pre-release [import] album in late June 1976 and immediately hit the Top 20 Reggae LPs chart published by Black Echoes on July 3rd at No.7. Within two weeks, all copies of the Jamaican import had dried-up in the UK and it disappeared from the chart. This is why this particular pressing is so hard to come by in its original form - it was only around for a few weeks during that muggy summer of '76. The Island Records British issue entered the chart a few weeks later on August 21st 1976 and it reached No.1 on September 18th.  
This elusive slice of ORIGINAL dub history remains one of the most sought-after Lee Perry albums.
