Our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. We use an ultrasonic KLAudio machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. John Lennon's death brought Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr (on "Take It Away") and George Martin as producer together into the same recording studio room. However there was a failed attempt to enlist George Harrison to perform guitar solo on "Wanderlust."
In one sense, Tug of War plays out like the album we might've gotten had Lennon and McCartney taken up Lorne Michaels' famous $3,000 offer to reunite on "Saturday Night" in 1976. George Martin sits at the controls on a Fab Four-related project for the first time since Wings' "Live and Let Die". The specter of Lennon's tragic death and the unresolved differences between the two lifelong friends loom large across much of this material, especially the jubilant "Ballroom Dancing", the symphonic title track and "Here Today". The latter is the album's most direct reflection on Lennon's death, and it's a song McCartney has been regularly incorporating in his concerts the last couple of tours. Whatever Paul might not have said in the press at the time of Lennon's assassination, he certainly said here. Tug of War was a success, and probably the slickest record in McCartney’s back catalog up to that point (save for maybe Wings’ 1975 effort Venus and Mars). Tug Of War features two great McCartney tunes in “Take it Away,” a punchy modern-crafted number bolstered by a tight backing section, and “Ballroom Dancing,” which might be the best of the ex-Beatles’ songs about the “early days”: "Ballroom dancing made a man of me." The biggest hit on the record at the time, though, was “Ebony and Ivory,” a duet with the legendary Stevie Wonder. The title track, for example, definitely fits that description as it is a very powerful and touching anthem that is bound to show us once and for all that McCartney can be more than a message-free song-writer if he wants to. Pay attention in particular to that moment when the electric guitar kicks in and the emotional “In another world” line backed up by heavenly harmonies. The song is the absolute highlight, only if it wasn’t constantly battling for that title with ‘The Pound is Sinking’, another tune where McCartney shuffles so easily and gracefully through different melodies and moods before finally culminating with that ferocious scream, that it almost hurts to see the track so rarely mentioned among his absolute best of work.
But let’s move for a while into the ballad territory. ‘Here Today’, as you probably already know, is Paul’s ode to John Lennon and will most definitely move you upon the first listen. Two years passed since his ex-Beatle-fellow/best friend/successful collaborator died, and its worth giving the song an open-minded listen as it sure as hell ain’t bad (the strings in particular, are a really nice touch). On the other hand, ‘Wanderlust’ and ‘Somebody Who Cares’, are really enjoyable ballads. Especially the latter, with its contemplative mood and heavenly guitar-flute solo.
Then there’s the two seemingly forgotten masterworks: the honky-tonky, bombastic ‘Ballroom Dancing’, featuring the famous McCartney scream (looks like his vocal chords were still at full range at the time) and the funky ‘Dress Me Up As A Robber’, which is considered a successful stab at something then current sounding wioth a memorable melody, of course.
All said, "Tug Of War" was a total change of approach to the prior McCartney album. A real talent showcase with all types of genres immensely helped by the familiar production by George Martin.
