New old stock, from the golden age of classical analog recording. Still sealed and presumed to be virgin vinyl, mint, unplayed.
In fact, this first studio production of Wagner's 4-opera Ring Cycle, recorded over a 6-year time span in the infant days of stereo, is still considered one of the greatest achievements in the history of recorded sound. Plaudits go to Decca producer John Culshaw, conductor Georg Solti, the legendary Vienna Philharmonic, and the starry cast of singers (inc. Brigit Nilsson as Brunnhilde) prominently displayed on the cover of the box.
London Records were produced by England's vaunted Decca Record Co. Ltd, expressly for the U.S. market. The only reason they were forced to create a new label was because a U.S. based company, Decca Records, already owned the rights to that name. Many audiophiles believe that British London and British Decca pressings are interchangeable--having gone through the same production process. I offer no personal opinion here. (Get me on the subject of analog vs. digital, however--and I have a few things to say!)
The shrink-wrap is torn at top edge & bottom front...and whatever caused the break at top also tore off some of the box's black lining, exposing some bare cardboard. But it's evident the box has never been opened, its vinyl contents untouched and unplayed. An E. J. Korvette retail sticker is still affixed at back.
