Ned Lagin studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the late 1960s and also attended the equally prestigious Berklee Music School in Boston. It was in Boston that Lagin first struck up a relationship with the Dead by sending Jerry Garcia a letter after seeing the band perform for the Boston Tea Party in 1969 and would later organize a GD show at MIT in 1970. Jerry then invited Lagin to San Francisco where he added piano to American Beauty’s “Candyman.” Ned first joined the Dead onstage at a legendary 1971 show at The Capitol Theatre — included on the recently released deluxe edition of American Beauty.

Unbroken Chain” from 1974’s From The Mars Hotel which sees Ned on synthesizer as well as a snippet of Lesh and Lagin collaborating to create psychedelic sounds through the “Wall Of Sound” which featured during set breaks of GD shows in 1974. Additionally, Lagin’s own sonic soundscape composition Seastones, released on the Grateful Dead’s Round Records and potions of which also appear live in a trio of Dick’s Picks volumes.
