Second Edition is the 1980 U.S. release of the second album by Public Image Ltd. Originally the album was released in the UK (23 November 1979) as a limited-edition 3×12" (45 RPM) titled Metal Box, which was packaged in a round metal box. But Warner Brothers in North America didn't want to pay for the extra packaging and triple vinyl, so it was changed to a 2x12" (33 RPM) in a standard gatefold sleeve, and the title changed to Second Edition. [Virgin UK went on to use this format and title for a reissue (22 February 1980) once the original Metal Box sold out.]

The album was a departure from PiL's 1978 debut First Issue, with the band moving into a more avant-garde sound characterised by John Lydon's cryptic lyrics, propulsive dub-inspired rhythms led by bassist Jah Wobble, and an abrasive, "metallic" guitar sound developed by guitarist Keith Levene. In 2003, the album was included in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list at No. 469, the magazine calling it "eerie, futuristic art punk with dub bass and slashing guitar". In 2012, it moved up to number 461. Rolling Stone also included it in their 100 Best Albums of the Eighties, ranking it at No. 76. In 2002, Pitchfork ranked Metal Box at No. 19 on its "Top 100 Albums of the 1980s". 

THIS COPY is a 1st Los Angeles pressing from 1980 on the Island Records label (see Notes, below).

The vinyl has few marks, but per a test listen, a tick or two was heard, I think on side one. Overall, the vinyl is in Very Good Plus [VG+] condition.

The original gatefold cover shows general signs of handling and some ring wear. However, it remains sturdy, with no seam splits. Overall, the cover is in Very Good [VG] or better condition.

The inner sleeves are believed to be original, but as they are plain white, they may not be, so I am not claiming that they are. These inner sleeves are in Very Good Plus [VG+] condition, with no major flaws beyond one small split in a side seam of one of them.

The included original one-sided insert, which offer for sale a Warner Brothers sampler entitled A La Carte, is in Excellent [EX] condition.

"Swan Lake" was titled "Swan Lake (Death Disco)" on Metal Box, and is a slightly different version of the track "Death Disco" that was released as a single in June, 1979.

Although the album has a Warner Bros. catalog number, the album cover and labels use the Island logo.
