You don’t see many of these about, eh?! This live un@fficial 45 of the famous San Fran gig reared its ugly head when I was a spotty East London teenager back in 78-9 - and I had to have it! It was hot stuff, shall we say, and I forked out an absolute fortune for it: £8 would have bought a lot of sweets then!
Belsen Was A Gas is without doubt, the Sex Pistols most outrageous song ever, if not the world’s. The Sex Pistol’s name was so bad they chose not to include their name on the record label, just the leading moniker, Rotten Role. Cook & Jones later re-recorded another version with Ronnie Biggs, but nothing beats gutter-sniping Johnny Rotten, who sounds more venomous and verminous than ever.
I’ve been the sole owner of this vinyl treasure all this time, although it hardly ever got played in case my parents caught wind of the lyrics! Condition-wise, it’s OK, with a bit of visual scuffing. I just played it both sides and there is a click or two, but that’s all. And it’s still f@@@ing outrageous. Punk is dead. Long live Rotten Role.
