SHAKIN' STEVENS & THE SUNSETS: Spirit Of Woodstock/Down On The Farm (UK Parlophone R 5860 1970 PROMO 45)
For auction is the 1970 debut 45 from Shakin' Stevens in it's first pressed PROMO form. It would several more years for Shakin' Stevens to become a household name in the charts and by then he had much toned down the raw rockabilly drive on display here - particularly on the wild psychobilly B side, 'Down On The Farm'. A proper killer track.
Produced by Dave Edmunds the single sold in tiny quantities at the time and hardly ever turns up for sale. Well here it is and not only that but it's one of the handful of promo copies pressed up for industry distribution with the usual black Parlophone label replaced by a vivid green.
The disc is in truly excellent condition, the vinyl bright, clean and glossy, with one or two short faint hairlines at most, quite remarkable for a record nearly half a century old now. The labels free of writing or rips though the centre hole is large in the juke-box style (maybe fitting for such an original rock and roll artefact).
This is a powerhouse of a rockabilly noise and should be very familiar to collectors as one of the great UK rarities of the genre.
