RALP 6011st SHARON WHITBREAD & FRED
Variety is the.. SPICE OF LIFE

TRACKS - IT'S JUST A GAME * MANY A MILE * BLACK WATER SLIDE * GLENN'S SONG * MUST I GO ROUND * MAKE ME A PALATE
(NOW WE'RE RUNNING) TWICE AS FAST * STAR * LAZARUS * GYPSY SONG * REFLECTIONS * FIXIN' TO DIE

Sharon = lead vocal * Fred = acoustic guitar
Folk duo residing in Ashburton, Devon. Actually, Fred's real name is Tony Hart.

Electric Backing Band
J. Young = tenor sax; John Eden = bass; John Snell (I.H.) = flute; R. Swiecicki = slide (Glenn's Song);
Tony Waldron = piano, electric guitar; Glenn Turner = lead guitar; Kim Turner = drums; etc.

Listening to Sharon's vocal style, she is possibly influenced by Buffy Sainte-Marie and Marc Bolan! Weird!!. In fact, "Must I Go Bound" is a Buffy composition. The Choir on "Lazeras" is credited to, amongst others, FARAWAY FOLK, although on listening, this is not too obvious. Kim Turner, who is STING'S co-manager, and was originally sound engineer and road manager for THE POLICE in the early days, has appeared in several groups, including CAT IRON and THE ANDY FRASER BAND, while his brother Glenn Turner is Martin Turner of WISHBONE ASH - an incarnation of EMPTY VESSELS . "Glenn's Song" is penned by Glenn and Elizabeth Usher. * Recorded 1972 * Issued 1972

I’ve long been fascinated by RA Records ever since I stumbled onto
Peter Rice’s web page on the label a few years back. RA were housed in Paignton (Near Torquay)

This is a Great record. Sharon Whitbread (who’s possibly responsible for one other record released in 1976 on Pye – worth investigating) provides the albums vocals whilst ‘Fred’ (who’s real name is apparently Tony Heart) provides guitar. Sharon who was just 15/16 years old when she recorded this LP with ‘Fred’ (then aged 17) had a really unusual high wobbly vocal style.

The two standout tracks are ‘Lazeras’, that was also covered by Buffy Sainte-Marie. This is a similar take to Buffy’s with an added laidback funky bass guitar and backing vocals from RA’s Faraway Folk. The second is a version of British folk singer (and father to Kirsty) Ewan MacColl’s ‘Gypsy Song’ which adds bass, drums and a horn section into the mix and like ‘Lazeras’ it wanders into what I shall lazily label as ‘folk funk rock territory’.

PS: Within the duration of setting out this page, sad news has filtered through that Kim Turner has passed away,
following problems with that dreaded thing we are all too aware of, cancer.
