PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback.   We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music!               1971 ORIGINAL SWIRL VERTIGO

    "(A Ballad Of ) A Peaceful Man"

\                                  SOUTH AFRICA - SWIRL VERTIGO - 6360 - 051

... BEAUTIFUL TOP COPY ...

By far much more hard to find, talk about "rare" to find the 1971 South African SWIRL VERTIGO first press in MINTY CLEAN condition ...

Cut from the original UK masters in 1971, the audio is terrific, a full wide range sound with peaking highs and heavy bottom ... to hear is to believe ... Generally speaking, 45 year old South African prog and psych collectibles NEVER turn up this (mint) clean, collectors are happy to pay high $$$ dollar sums for "VG" range South African Psych / Prog (See Freedom Children Lp's for instance)

Just a year after the release of their 1970 first LP on Vertigo, Gravy Train released their follow-up "Ballad Of A Peaceful Man" ...

In 1971 Gravy Train left its blues influences behind, achieving a more dynamic sound while moving into the heavy progressive-rock terrain. The instrument passages take on a larger role and confirm Gravy Train as one of the most talented bands in the British progressive underground.

" (A Ballad of) A Peaceful Man" was Gravy Train's most praised - album. Unlike their hard edged first album, this album sports some lovely backing arrangements creating a full often majestic sound, credited to producer  Nick Harrison. A unique feature of the album is that it splits the heavy tracks from the melodic tracks: all the heavenly tracks are on side 1, while all the hard progressive rockers are on side 2.  This album is full of timeless melancholy and offers a wonderful mix of progressive rock elements. Lots of great whirling electrified flute flutters and soars throughout, reminiscing early Jethro Tull's creative style yet still retaining distinctly an original style. Complimented by Hammond organ and fuzz guitar the stellar part of this album is the adventurous well executed instrumentation topped off by the immediately noticeable raw yet pure vocals of Norman Barrett. The multi-talented J.D.Hughes handles flute, winds and keyboards (like harpsichord and Mellotron.) Norman Barratt also handles heavy guitar parts along with lead vocals.

Album highlights include the title track, "(A Ballad Of) A Peaceful Man". It features some really stunning flute work amid heavenly backing arrangement. Elsewhere, "Jule's Delight" is another atmospheric ballad, while "Messenger" has a more symphonic feel complete with Mellotron. "Can Anybody Hear Me" and "Won't Talk About It" harkens back to the harder rock sound more typical of their highly rated first album, with tasty fuzz guitar breaks. "Home Again" shows some psychedelic overtones, and a nice way to close the album.

Really, when it comes for early, Vertigo-era Gravy Train, it all comes to taste, hard rock fans are obviously advised to check out their first album, progressive rock fans should go to "(A Ballad Of) A Peaceful Man."
