SHORTY & THE ENCHANTED SOULS – WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE / RAINY DAY BLUES (COMBO JP-190) (VG+/VG-)
Most likely from Southern California, this band is quite a mystery. This single includes the Animals classic song We Gotta Get Out of This Place, penned by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. I was unable to confirm the actual Date the song was written, but the two songwriters were married in 1961, and it appears that Combo Records was in business only up through 1961, but the label discography has a lot of unexplained holes. So in theory, this single COULD be from 1961. But if it was, then Shorty & the Enchanted Souls certainly have one of the earliest contributions to the true Garage music genre. Their version of We Gotta Get Out of This Place is an incredibly primitive sounding recording which essentially sounds like a first or second rehearsal take. Half the lyrics are mumbled and the other half are improvised. The drum breaks in the song are very different than the Animals version, so it’s pretty obvious that their version was prior to the hit. The guitar doesn’t appear to be a fuzz box but it’s seriously overdriven. The flip side, Rainey Day Blues, is an excellent (mid-60’s) "sounding" garage-soul-pop tune and also features the overdriven guitar (albeit briefly). The earliest (well known) recorded version of the Animals hit song is Barry Mann's version from 1964, which is obviously the one that the Animals covered. It seems like Shorty's recording could have been recorded as late as 63/64, based on the guitar and organ tones, but that's just a working theory. The fact that Shorty and The Enchanted Souls released a second single in 1967 on another label, also makes it seem like a long period between singles if this was really recorded in 1961. Regardless of the recording date, this single is an important footnote in the history of the classic song and is pretty much unknown. It was released on a 2004 Arf Arf CD Comp, which apparently has liner notes, so if anyone has it, please let me know what they say about this band! This copy is a solid VG+ and plays closer to EX- on both sides. Check out the scans and audio samples.

NM/M: Played once or twice. No visible surface or playback wear.
EX: Has been played but has no scratches, minimal to no wear and plays without surface noise.
EX- Plays without surface noise, but might have a few visible minor scratches.
VG++: May have a few surface scratches or a little wear, but plays nicely with only minimal surface noise and clicks. No Skips
VG+: "Typical used record". A little wear, a few minor (light) scratches, but plays well. Surface noise may be more present during soft passages. No Skips
VG: More wear and significant surface noise. Deeper scratches. May have a skip and will be noted.
G: Significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. (Beat up record!) May have skips if noted.
