Es scheint keinen Bereich zu geben, in dem man Fehler an dieser Version finden kann. Daniel Shafran, der russische Cellist, ist in absolut hervorragender Form, stilistisch und ausdrucksstark. In beiden aufgenommenen Werken hat er diese schwer fassbaren Aspekte eingefangen - die genau richtige Geste für die vorliegende Musik. Außerdem ist es gut, den Schostakowitsch so gut gespielt zu hören. Die Cellosonate ist eines der erfolgreichsten Kammermusikwerke des Komponisten, eines der erfolgreichsten Werke in seinem Katalog. Anscheinend hatten Daniel Shafran und Lydia Pecherskaya einen großen Erfolg mit Schubert in der Carnegie Hall. Auf dieser Platte zeigt sich Shafran als sehr fähiger Spieler ... Ich war froh, dass Shafran im ersten Satz nicht ganz so rhythmisch eigensinnig ist ... und ich dachte, sein einschmeichelndes Spiel kommt im Finale, das einen unwiderstehlichen Rhythmus hat.
There would seem to be no area in which one can find fault with this release. Daniel Shafran, the Russian cellist, is in absolutely superb form, stylistically and expressively. In both recorded works, he has captured that elusive thing - the precisely right gesture for the music at hand. It is good, moreover, to hear the Shostakovich so well played. Apparently Daniel Shafran and Lydia Pecherskaya scored a big success with Schubert at Carnegie Hall recital. On this record Shafran emerges as a very able player ... Elman still plays with charm and elegance ... In this batch of pieces, where the encore wags the concert, so to speak, Elman and Seiger combine war-horses and novelties in captivating manner. I was charmed by the exotic "From San Domingo", by Arthur Benjamin, with its echoes of guitars and popular songs. Charles Miller’s "Cubanaise" ... (its) vivacious rhythms and sonorous middle section are most appealing. Perhaps the item that most listeners will fall for is Elman’s arrangement of the so-called "Canto Amoroso" by Sammartini, an encore which Elman has made peculiarly his own. - Gramophone
