DESCRIPTION FROM CRUCIAL BLAST:
A super-limited, one time only vinyl-only release of Venom covers from Japanese black metal weirdos Sigh that is a sight to behold...in spite of the simple artwork (the classic Venom goat-head/pentagram logo redone as an ancient Japanese dragon), the etching on the b-side is quite rad, and visually, this is one awesome-looking art object. And I was really looking forward to hearing Sigh take on a bunch of classic Venom jams; anyone that has followed these psychedelic Moog-lovin' thrashers since their early days knows that throughout all of 60's psych-pop, sonic warfare experiments, Teutonic classical music, avant-gardisms and other weirdness that they have incoporated into their music over the years, Sigh's music first and foremost started out of their undying worship of the O.G. black metallers Venom. And based on the last couple of Sigh albums, I was hoping that these covers were going to get thoroughly Sigh-ified with trippy electronics and analogue synths or other unblack instruments, or something along those lines. Instead, the covers are played almost totally straight, and I've gotta say I was bummed at first. No Moogs? Come on! A couple of Troegenators later though, a nice golden haze came on and I started to dig on this measurably more for what it is. For starters, we do get one all-too-brief flash of Sigh's proggy genius with the cover of "Mayhem With Mercy" which replaces the guitars of the original with Mirai's trademark classical piano and synths - awesome. The buzzsaw bass is provided by both Dan Lilker (Nuclear Assault/Brutal Truth) and Shane Embury (Venomous Concept/Unseen Terror/Napalm Death). And the bluesy chooglin' of "Teachers Pet" sounds fucking sublime in the hands of Sigh. The rest of the songs ("Black Metal", "Die Hard", "Countess Bathory", "Schizo", "Witching Hour") are interpreted close to the originals, with Mirai's snarling and heavily accented vocals standing in for Cronos' original rasp. More for Sigh diehards and completists - I'd recommend anyone new to Sigh to check out Imaginary Sonicscape or Hangmens Hymn first - this is still pretty raging. And delicious to look at and hold. The End released two versions of the record, one on black vinyl, the other on opaque red vinyl, both with the etching on the b-side. And both come with a CD version of the tracks for your stereo/Ipod/discman. The etched black vinyl was issued in a run of 2,000 copies. © CRUCIAL BLAST
