Though there are innumerable versions of SOUNDS FROM THE THIEVERY HI-FI, each with a slightly different tracklist, one thing stays constant: the classic grooves and smooth production values. Many of these tracks originally appeared on 12", but the Thievery Corporation have picked the gems for their debut, from the dubby "2001 Spliff Odyssey" to the Indian-tinged "Transcendence." Indeed, the Thievery Corporation had a definite hand in bringing the whole 'international' downtempo scene to the fore. The languorous Portuguese vocals on "Mañha" ooze a subtle melancholy, while "Encounter In Bahia" brings in the funk. The dreamy and sublime "Shaolin Satellite" still remains one of the highlights of the album, as is the transcendent "The Foundation." "One" rounds out this album on a dreamy note, helping this landmark album cement its place in electronic music history.
Thievery Corporation is an American electronic music duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton. Their musical style mixes elements of dub, acid jazz, reggae, Indian classical, Middle Eastern, hip hop, electronica, and Brazilian, including bossa nova.
